A Busy November! technésexual, freephone, performances and talks!

I’ve been having a wonderfully busy November and I still have even more excitement next week!

If you’re in Reno, Nevada, or in Second Life, check out my and Elle’s performance at the Prospectives.09 festival on November 14th!

This past weekend Elle, Chris and I did a really fun talk about our Freephone project at the Machine Project in Los Angeles. Check out the photos here!

Also, our Freephone article in the Inflexions Journal for research creation from the Sense Lab in Montreal came out this week. It includes a howto for making your own freephone!

And in other cool news, Gabriel Menotti wrote a really interesting review of Artivistic TURN*ON for Furtherfield.org which mentions our workshop and includes photos of our performance!

There was also an exciting hacktivism action that took place this week where major media, students, faculty and staff received an email from President Yudof announcing a new $0 tuition program! But of course I have no idea who was involved… There was some media coverage on the LAist blog and lots of tweets!

Video of technésexual in Montreal at Artivistic TURN*ON

This video was done with just our Flip, we’re working on a better documentation video soon.

technésexual // Echolalia Azalee and Azdel Slade from azdel slade on Vimeo.

//The sound is very low frequency, so please use headphones or good speakers to hear the video//

Performed in Montreal at Artivistic TURN*ON.

In technésexual, Echolalia Azalee and Azdel Slade commit playful erotic acts in physical and virtual space simultaneously, using devices to amplify the sound of their heartbeats for the two audiences. An electrocardiogram will be used to monitor the heart rate with an Arduino/Freeduino, playing a recording of the heartbeat at the correct rate using Puredata. DIY biometrics are used to bridge realities with audio, finding ways of exploring the space between realities.

technésexual opens discussion on the multitude of sexualities outside of the restrictive LGBT formulation and homo/hetero categories, which are rooted in binary gender assumptions. The mixing of realities in this project can be seen as paralleling our own experiences mixing genders and sexualities, queering new media. Virtual worlds such as Second Life facilitate the development of new identities, allowing for unimagined relations and relationships. technésexual looks closely at these new relationships, how they affect our everyday lives and horizons of possibility.

Arse Elektronikahttp://www.monochrom.at/arse-elektronika – Of Intercourse and Intracourse = Sexuality, Genetics, Biotech, Wetware, Body mods = Scottish SF author Iain Banks created a fictitious group-civilisation called “Culture” in his eponymous narrative. The vast majority of humanoid people in the “Culture” are born with greatly altered glands housed within their central nervous systems, who secrete – on command – mood- and sensory-appreciation-altering compounds into the person’s bloodstream. Additionally many inhabitants have subtly altered reproductive organs – and control over the associated nerves – to enhance sexual pleasure. Ovulation is at will in the female, and a fetus up to a certain stage may be re-absorbed, aborted, or held at a static point in its development; again, as willed. Also, a viral change from one sex into the other, is possible. And there is a convention that each person should give birth to one child in their lives. It may sound strange, but Banks states that a society in which it is so easy to change sex will rapidly find out if it is treating one gender better than the other. Pressure for change within society would presumably build up until some form of sexual equality and hence numerical parity will be established. Does this set-up sound too futuristic? Too utopian? Too bizarre?

Artivistic 2009 – TURN*ON – http://artivistic.org/ – The world to come is so sexy. We are unstoppable for we are fueled with an incredible urge to embrace the pleasure provided by difference, exchange and liberation. Our actions today are charged with an energy that is animated by the rise of change and a movement that is simply irresistible. For its upcoming fourth edition, Artivistic is going sexy. From October 15 to 17, 2009, we invite participants to discuss, question, and imagine the proxemics of sexuality, technology and politics. While keeping issues of power and control in question, we want to turn to the potency of pleasure, curiosity, humor, and desire in order to TURN*ON that which has yet to be thought and experienced differently.

Technésexual performance at GLAMFA in Long Beach, CA

For this version of the performance, we wore heart rate monitor straps which use Electrocardiogram technology to detect your heartbeat using electricity. The signal from these sensors was received with a sparkfun module and our arduino and freeduino. The heart rates were used to play the live sound of our heartbeats for the audience in the physical space as well as in Second Life.

Technésexual by Micha Cardenas and Elle Mehrmand @ the Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics in Bogota, Colombia

Mixed Reality Performance of Technesexual, part of Mixed Relations.

The performance consisted of the performers engaging in playful erotic acts in physical and virtual space, while using handmade electronic stethoscopes to play the sound of their heartbeats in both spaces, blurring the lines between the two. It was part of the Trasnocheo performance space curated by Susana Cook as part of the Hemispheric Institute for Performance and Politics 7th Encuentro at Mapa Teatro in Bogota, Colombia. The stethoscopes consisted of analog stethoscopes connected to piezo sensors wired to 1/8″ audio jacks.
